Coffe Shop Ride

Today we rode south from Solana Beach to La Jolla. James, Jeff, Chris, Todd and I rolled a pace I could manage and had terrific weather, great company, and some very tasty coffee from Bird Rock Coffee Roasters. Yes they dropped me on the two climbs up Torrey but I kept turning them and luckily they slowed down and waited for me.

James is James Stout a 21 year old member of Team Type 1 and a Type 1 diabetic himself. He is a really down to earth guy, as far as racers go I haven't met another as approachable and friendly. Next week he is racing in the Red Trolley Classic come out and help us cheer him on. If you are a Red Rider bring/wear your shirt so we can form a support section. He will be racing in the Pro class at noon I believe, but come watch all the races and have a great time.

Don't forget to read Jeff''s blog at

Here is my data from today's ride, if you ever want to join me for a week-end or a weekday afternoon spin make sure you contact me at by about Thursday so I can let you know what is planned.

Another trip up L Alpe Double Peak

Today was a rather easy pace, mostly because I'm not built for climbing and we did quite a bit of it. Eric Bowen, @FitTechEric, and I road out to Pannikin from San Marcos where we met Jeff Bean, @BikeCrave, for coffee. We then came north and then east to climb Double Peak, Jeff had never been up this incline and easily out paced Eric, who left me bringing up the rear, to the top. Believe me that man can get up some steep terrain. Jeff complimented us by saying that it was a gut wrencher for him as well and he has climbed some serious mountains. He now plans to use Double Peak in his regular rotation, meaning I will probably get to follow his vapor trail up that monster again sometime soon.

All in all it was a good ride and I haven't completely collapsed yet so I must be stronger than last time. Here is the data for what it is worth.

I want to share 'Coffee Shop' with you

Emily from MyLifeOnTheBike interviewed Markus from Cyclefilm and
Cameron from La Fuga Travel about cities with a strong bike culture
and wonders why San Diego lacks one.

I thought you would enjoy the video:

Bicycle safety page

Great page discussing bicycle safety. A must for all those taking to the road for fitness or other reasons without a lot of experience. Also great for those of us who think we have the road mastered, chances are we just haven't had our accident yet.

Garmin Connect - Activity Details for 1-14-10

Rode to the coast and back today. Started cold outta the garage straight up Twin Oaks Valley Rd and then enjoyed the relatively smooth downhill run to Cardiff.

Stopped by the Encinitas Ritz Carlton, AKA Days Inn and met with Markus Neuert about upcoming ADA Tour de Cure kick-off party Jan 21st from 6-8:30pm at Phil's BBQ on Sports Arens Blvd in San Diego.

Here is the ride data, headwind for much of the ride reminded me why I like to ride in the morning.

Blasted myself

Had a Bike fitting from Eric Bowen the other day, he is @BikFit, and he told me to pick it up and pedal faster. So today I tried to increase cadence and almost blew-up before coming up Twin Oaks to home. Five more miles and I would have bonked hard I believe.

I'm actually pretty happy with these numbers it is hard for me to continue to drive myself up the climbs when I am riding solo.

Bike San Diego » Are your traffic lights insensitive?

Awesome, I will have to see if San Marcos has a process for this, although the last time I went to a traffic safety committee meeting to protest the removal of the bike lane on Village Dr I got the feeling that the committee member might be followers of the Face Book cycling haters fan page.

But check out Bike San Diego's story it may give you hope that real people are working in city government, at least in San Diego.
