Garmin Connect - Activity Details for 2-1-10

Today's ride started with a meet-up at the fire station on the top off Twin Oaks Valley road. As Eric lives on one side and I on the other we thought it was a logical place to start. We road south and west to the coast against an evil headwind and turned north along the PCH until finally getting the wind at our backs along La Costa heading east. Up El Camino to Palomar Airport Road and then down Melrose back to Rancho Santa Fe and back onto San Elijo Road and finished back at the fire station on top of Twin Oaks. We did not attempt Double Peak this time.

If Eric ever tells you how out of shape he is and that he is suffering with 20 extra pounds don't fall for it, he still has great fitness. He was pulling me along north on the PCH into the wind at 22 -23 mph and when I took a pull I could only manage 18 mph for a short time into the wind. So consider yourself warned.

Eric is the fitting technician behind www.bikfit.com he also has a couple of other alias's which you can discover on hisweb site. Eric fit me on my bike and is continuing to moinitor my position and suggest some minor tweaks. If you have never had a true professional bike fitting you will be amazed at what a few simple adjustments will do for your comfort and power. Let me say that again, you will be amazed at what a few simple adjustments will do for your comfort and power.

Her's my data, don't know if anyone looks but here it is anyway.

Coffe Shop Ride

Today we rode south from Solana Beach to La Jolla. James, Jeff, Chris, Todd and I rolled a pace I could manage and had terrific weather, great company, and some very tasty coffee from Bird Rock Coffee Roasters. Yes they dropped me on the two climbs up Torrey but I kept turning them and luckily they slowed down and waited for me.

James is James Stout a 21 year old member of Team Type 1 and a Type 1 diabetic himself. He is a really down to earth guy, as far as racers go I haven't met another as approachable and friendly. Next week he is racing in the Red Trolley Classic come out and help us cheer him on. If you are a Red Rider bring/wear your shirt so we can form a support section. He will be racing in the Pro class at noon I believe, but come watch all the races and have a great time. http://www.socalcycling.com/RaceAnn/2010/red_trolley_flyer_2010.pdf

Don't forget to read Jeff''s blog at www.Bikecrave.com

Here is my data from today's ride, if you ever want to join me for a week-end or a weekday afternoon spin make sure you contact me at weezyrider@gmail.com by about Thursday so I can let you know what is planned.

Another trip up L Alpe Double Peak

Today was a rather easy pace, mostly because I'm not built for climbing and we did quite a bit of it. Eric Bowen, @FitTechEric, and I road out to Pannikin from San Marcos where we met Jeff Bean, @BikeCrave, for coffee. We then came north and then east to climb Double Peak, Jeff had never been up this incline and easily out paced Eric, who left me bringing up the rear, to the top. Believe me that man can get up some steep terrain. Jeff complimented us by saying that it was a gut wrencher for him as well and he has climbed some serious mountains. He now plans to use Double Peak in his regular rotation, meaning I will probably get to follow his vapor trail up that monster again sometime soon.

All in all it was a good ride and I haven't completely collapsed yet so I must be stronger than last time. Here is the data for what it is worth.

Bicycle safety page

http://www.bicyclesafe.com/

Great page discussing bicycle safety. A must for all those taking to the road for fitness or other reasons without a lot of experience. Also great for those of us who think we have the road mastered, chances are we just haven't had our accident yet.

Blasted myself

Had a Bike fitting from Eric Bowen the other day, he is @BikFit, and he told me to pick it up and pedal faster. So today I tried to increase cadence and almost blew-up before coming up Twin Oaks to home. Five more miles and I would have bonked hard I believe.

I'm actually pretty happy with these numbers it is hard for me to continue to drive myself up the climbs when I am riding solo.

Bike San Diego » Are your traffic lights insensitive?

Awesome, I will have to see if San Marcos has a process for this, although the last time I went to a traffic safety committee meeting to protest the removal of the bike lane on Village Dr I got the feeling that the committee member might be followers of the Face Book cycling haters fan page.

But check out Bike San Diego's story it may give you hope that real people are working in city government, at least in San Diego.

ADA Tour de Cure

Support Me in Tour de Cure!

I will be cycling in the American Diabetes Association's Tour de Cure fundraising event. Please support me with a donation by selecting the "Click Here to Sponsor Me" link. Our efforts will help set the pace in the fight against diabetes. So let's get in gear and ride to beat diabetes!

Help Make a Difference!

Pedal power works!

Each mile I ride, and the funds I raise will be used in the fight to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.

No matter how small or large, your generous gift will help improve the lives of more than 23.6 million Americans who suffer from diabetes, in the hope that future generations can live in a world without this disease. Together, we can all make a difference!

Thank you for making a generous contribution to this cause that is so important to me!

About Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. The cause of diabetes continues to be a mystery, although both genetics and environmental factors appear to play roles. There are 23.6 million Americans living with diabetes, a disease that is outpacing heart disease, cancer and AIDS. Diabetes is a disease that has deadly serious consequences, and there is no cure.

Fourteen little tips from Cycle Krazy

This is just a list of 15 tips that aren’t long enough to warrant their own topic so i have condensed them into 1 post

1. Brake pad gap, remember that when you climb your wheel will flex so make sure you have about 1 to 2 mm either side so that you dont rub against the pad while climbing.

2. If you have spent a few weeks off the bike for some reason such as illness, you should drop your saddle a few mm. The time off the bike would mean you lost some flexibility, best way to regain it is slowly.

3. Train with strong riders. They will push your harder and you will get more out of your time on the bike.

4. Recover when needed, During heavy training schedules take the days off or do short slow easy rides. Your body needs this time.

5.Warm up and cool down. You will get more out of your workouts and will feel better after them.

6. Eat correctly, a good training plan should be coupled with a good diet. you get out what you put in.

7. Buy a power meter. I know they are expensive but if you are serious about improving then this is the best way.

8. Define yourself a training plan, know why you are riding that day and what you want to achieve. If you want to be really serious get yourself a coach.

9. Race conservatively and train hard.

10. Wear a helmet. This is law around most of the civilized world now anyway.

11. Carry enough food and water for your ride. when you eat, eat lightly often, no pigging out mid ride.

12. Service your bike regularly.

13. Take wet weather gear if it looks like it might rain.

14. Don’t overlap wheels in group rides.

Sunday ride

My Doctor has okay’d a mild pace for as long as I like for this Sunday. As long as I don’t get my blood pressure too high.

That means someone else will have to take care of the road rage toward inattentive and dangerous drivers.

I would like to start in Carlsbad and ride south on the PCH and return for a coffee stop.

Hope to see you there.
